How to get rid of the afternoon slump

Does it hits like clockwork?

Somewhere between 2:00 and 4:00 PM? When your energy dips, your brain gets foggy, and your motivation takes a coffee break without you?

The afternoon slump is a real thing, but it doesn’t have to hit you hard. With just a few small shifts, you can feel energized, focused, and ready to tackle the rest of your day.

Here are 3 simple tips to get rid of that slump and stay focused throughout the day!

  1. First adjust lunch.  Heavy, carb-loaded meals (think: pasta, white bread, sugary drinks) may feel satisfying at the time, but they’re often the cause of the sluggish crash later. Try balancing your plate with protein, healthy fats, and fibre (think: grilled chicken with quinoa and veggies, or a big salad with avocado and seeds).  And make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the morning.

  2. Then move after you have eaten.  When your body slows down, your brain follows. A quick burst of movement can wake everything up.  Try a 5 minute walk outside, or going up and down the stairs a few times.

  3. Make a point of getting natural light.  If you’re stuck indoors under artificial lights all day, your internal clock starts to think it’s bedtime by mid-afternoon. Get away from your desk from 10 minutes, sit near natural light or open a window if you can.  Natural light can really help to avoid the slump

By the way if you are using caffeine or diet drinks to pick you back up in the afternoon all you are doing is borrowing energy from tomorrow. Because caffeine later in the day will impact the quality of your sleep that night and you will wake the following day already exhausted before the day has even begun!

With just a few tweaks, you can power through with focus, energy, and maybe even a second wind.  The afternoon does not have to feel like you are wading through treacle!
