Avoiding summer holiday food sabotage

We have all been there – being really focussed on feeling good for our holiday.  Getting rid of the bloat, being careful about what we eat for weeks before, doing more exercise etc.  Then the day of the holiday comes and it is almost as if the past few weeks didn’t matter.

As soon as we arrive the wine is uncorked, the crisp packet is opened and we lose complete track of the focus we had worked so hard to achieve.  Within days we are feeling lethargic, bloated and not sleeping well.

So what are my top tips for staying on track with your focus whilst on holiday?  And don’t get me wrong I am not suggesting for one minute that you need to be the fun police when it comes to enjoying food on holiday.  But there are some really simple hacks you can apply every day that will make a difference to how you feel at the end of the holiday.

1.       Always take plenty of water with you wherever you go, and when eating out ask for a jug of water on your table, so that you stay fully hydrated.  Hydration is key to staying energised and making good choices on holiday.

2.       When you eat out ask for the gluten free and dairy free menu – that way you can avoid the beige carbs that can have such a huge impact on blood sugar levels and consequently motivation and energy.

3.       If you are out for the day make your lunch before you go, but keep it really simple – some crudities with hummus, or crust less quiche and cherry tomatoes.  This helps to avoid the food concessions where your choices may be limited to a sandwich or a burger.

4.       Have half a lemon squeezed into warm water first thing in the morning – it will help support digestion of a big meal from the night before, assist with hydration after consuming alcohol, and get you energised and ready for the day

5.       Get up 10 minutes before everyone else and go for a walk, a swim or a gentle jog. Or you could do a bit of yoga on the beach or by the pool.  Do something that will give your metabolism a boost whilst everyone else is lying in bed.  At the end of the day you will be so glad you did!

These are just simple things you can do that won’t make you feel like you are missing out, but can have a huge impact on your mindset and motivation to stay on track as best possible with your wellbeing goals whilst on holiday.

When I go away I apply these simple hacks everyday – and it really does help me to stay on track.
