What do one day of rain and your food focus have in common?

I am not giving up on summer just yet, even though we have had one rainy day recently. I am determined to wear my shorts for just a little bit longer yet!

And that got me thinking - giving up on summer because we have had one day of rain is a lot like giving up on your food focus just because you had one small blip. What is stopping us finding the focus to keep going when trying to cut out sugar?

Because admit it - how many times have you started over on Monday full of determination and focus and given into the chocolate cake in the kitchen/biscuits in the cupboard/kids chocolate bars in the draw* by Wednesday (*delete as appropriate!). Then after telling yourself you have blown it and that you cannot control the cravings. Then you eat another couple of slices of cake/biscuits/chocolate bar (again delete as appropriate) and tell yourself you will be good again next week. The same repeating cycle of starting over again next Monday.

Why do we let one small sugar craving derail our whole focus? Does it go back to the slimming clubs who would make you feel guilty if you had not lost weight, or is it the media presenting this idea of perfection that feels so out of reach for 90% of us that we give up trying? Or is it simply that we are not eating the right food to keep our blood sugar hormone insulin balanced?

So here is what I want you to do next time the wheels fall of your focus. Draw a line under it, remind yourself you have had two good days already, and you can get straight back on track. Then drink a glass of water, go out for a short walk to remove yourself from the cravings and change your mindset, and let go of the guilt.

In just the way that I am not going to let one day of rain send me running for my winter clothes, lets put one small blip one sugar craving in to the bigger picture of the progress you have made so far.
