A healthy spring clean

Saturday the 20th March (this weekend coming) marks the first day of spring!  I for one love this time of year, it is so full of optimism and new growth!

It is at this time of year that our energy levels naturally start to rise.  We find ourselves being more productive with the longer days and a little spring cleaning may also feature!!   Putting away the winter duvet, getting out more spring like clothes and maybe even moving the furniture around if you are really energised!!

Just as we spring clean the physical elements of our life, we should also have a spring clean internally.  Right now is when we should be giving our liver extra support.  A little TLC for the liver can really help with increasing our energy levels, mood and productivity every day!

The liver supports over 500 different functions in the body including hormone balance, clearing toxic build up and conversion of stored fat to glucose for energy production.   But none of this take place if the liver is struggling.  Our hormones can go out of balance, we feel slow and sluggish, and we store that toxic build up in fat stores around our middle. External signs of liver struggling are a slow sluggish feeling, bags under the eyes, and just generally feeling low and run down.

So how can you help your liver to do a better job every day?

These are my top tips

  1. Replace heavier more starchy foods with lighter more colourful food. Try to have at least one meal a day in its raw or lightly steamed form so that the nutrients are available to the body and not cooked out before they are eaten.

  2. Drink plenty of water, not just tea or coffee! Try to swap every other cup of tea or coffee for a hot water with a slice of lemon. This will really help to cleanse the liver and get rid of toxicity in the body.

  3. Always have something green on your plate – in Chinese medicine the liver is a green organ and it needs lots of green food to help with detoxification.

  4. Once a week treat yourself to an Epsom salts bath. The magnesium in the Epsom salts will really help support detoxification. But it will also help to balance hormones, help you sleep better and stabilise blood sugars thus giving you more energy

  5. Have 3-4 weeks alcohol free. Alcohol is the biggest toxin the liver has to deal with and this extra pressure on the liver can result in hot flushes and sweats, over eating the following day and feeling low and lethargic.

If you can implement some of these simple tips every day you will be supporting your liver to have its own spring clean.  But make sure you follow the guidelines for at least 28 days to see the real benefits.  Good luck!
