Two nutrients that make weight loss effortless

Can we talk about breakfast for a second? If yours is a slice of toast, or worse, just a coffee because you "don't have time," I want to gently stop you right there. Because I used to do exactly the same thing, and wonder why I was ravenous by 11am and elbow-deep in the biscuit tin by 3.

The answer wasn't willpower. It was protein and fibre, or rather, the total lack of it.

These two unglamorous, unsexy nutrients don't get anywhere near the attention they deserve, especially for women over 40. No one's running ads for "more lentils" or "an extra egg." But honestly? They will do more for your weight, your energy and your cravings than any shake, jab or six-week challenge.

Why your 40-something body needs more of both

From our late 30s onwards, we naturally start to lose muscle mass, a process that speeds up through perimenopause and menopause as oestrogen declines. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, which is a big part of why the same eating habits that worked in your 30s no longer keep the weight off.

Protein is what helps you hang onto (and build) that muscle. It also keeps you fuller for longer, so you're not white-knuckling it through the afternoon on nothing but caffeine and hope.

Fibre, meanwhile, is doing quiet but mighty work behind the scenes: slowing down how quickly sugar hits your bloodstream, feeding the good bacteria in your gut, and helping your body clear out excess hormones, which matters enormously when your hormones are already doing their own chaotic thing.

Together, they're the closest thing to a natural appetite switch that exists. Get enough of both and cravings quieten right down, often within days.

Making it simple (no weighing, no fuss)

1. Anchor every meal with a protein source first.

Eggs, Greek yoghurt, chicken, fish, tofu, beans, lentils. Ask yourself "where's my protein?" before you even think about the rest of the plate. This one habit alone changes more than most diets do.

2. Add colour and plants, not just "salad."

Fibre lives in vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, beans and pulses. You don't need to overhaul your meals, just add a handful of veg or a spoon of beans to what you already eat.

3. Rethink snacks.

Swap the biscuit for something with staying power: a boiled egg, some nuts, hummus and carrots. You'll be amazed how much steadier your energy feels by mid-afternoon.

This is exactly what we work on inside The Feel Fabulous Club

Inside the Club, we don't do calorie counting or complicated meal plans with obscure ingredients. Instead, part of the Feel Fabulous Method helps you build a simple food blueprint around protein and fibre that fits your real life, your real kitchen and your real family, so it becomes second nature rather than another diet to fail at.

You'll also get recipes, weekly live Q&As to ask exactly this kind of question, and a community of women over 40 figuring out the very same thing, together. See more details HERE.
